Heat Recovery & Smart Ventilation in Portugal:
Permanently Eliminate Mold, Damp & High Energy Bills

Eliminate Mold and Damp with Smart Ventilation in Portugal

If you’ve just moved to or rented a home in Portugal, you’ve likely encountered issues like damp walls, chilly rooms in winter, and rising energy costs from constant heating.

Renovation Experts, located in Porto, specializes in helping homeowners and expats create comfortable and energy-efficient living spaces. We recommend modern heat recovery ventilation systems (HRV / MVHR) as a top solution for dealing with the challenges posed by the region’s humid climate.

PRANA
Heat Recovery Ventilation Systems

Fresh air without heat loss

PRANA is a decentralised supply-and-exhaust ventilation system with heat recovery, designed to improve indoor air quality while reducing unnecessary heat loss. It continuously removes stale indoor air and supplies fresh outdoor air at the same time, helping maintain a healthier, drier and more comfortable indoor climate.

These systems are suitable for apartments, villas, offices, classrooms and other residential or light commercial spaces where humidity, condensation, stale air or recurring mould are a problem. For best results, PRANA units are designed for continuous operation, not occasional use.

Main Benefits of Heat Recovery Ventilation

Full protection against mold and damp
Thanks to automatic humidity control, moisture no longer remains trapped indoors. This helps maintain dry walls while protecting paint and plaster for years.

Lower heating costs by up to 50%
Stop losing valuable heat and significantly reduce electricity bills.

Healthier indoor air quality
Integrated CO₂ sensors help maintain clean, fresh air 24/7 — especially important for family health and wellbeing.

Smart control
Modern systems include Wi-Fi functionality and can be easily managed through a mobile app.

How PRANA works

At the core of the system is a counterflow copper heat exchanger with a continuous thermal cycle. Inside one cylindrical unit, PRANA creates two simultaneous air streams:

  • extract air removes stale, humid indoor air from the room
  • supply air brings fresh outdoor air into the room
  • the two airflows do not mix
  • heat from the outgoing warm air is transferred to the incoming fresh air

This allows the home to receive a constant supply of fresh air without the energy penalty of opening windows in winter.

Information and monitoring

Depending on the model, the PRANA display can show:

  • extract air temperature
  • supply air temperature
  • CO2 equivalent level
  • TVOC / air quality level
  • humidity
  • atmospheric pressure
  • filter contamination warning
  • sleep timer indication
  • AUTO mode indication
  • mini pre-heating indication
  • winter mode indication

This gives the user a clear picture of what the system is doing and what the indoor air conditions look like.

PRANA installation in Portugal

At Renovation Experts Portugal, we supply and install PRANA heat recovery ventilation systems for homes in Northern Portugal.

Our service typically includes:

  • inspection of the property and room layout
  • assessment of humidity / mould / ventilation problems
  • advice on correct PRANA model selection
  • wall core drilling and installation
  • external finish and sealing
  • commissioning and client handover

We do not treat ventilation as an isolated gadget. We assess it as part of the whole building envelope: humidity, airflow, window performance, insulation quality and mould risk.

Why Are Open Windows and
Heaters Not Enough?

Many property owners try to solve humidity problems with cosmetic fixes: repainting damaged walls or installing new airtight windows while forgetting about ventilation. As a result, moisture has nowhere to escape. It settles on cold corners and window reveals, causing mold to return within 3–6 months, unpleasant smells, and even floor damage.

At the same time, relying on electric heaters often means you are simply “heating the street.” Due to uncontrolled drafts and poor insulation, homes can lose 20–40% of heat through windows and up to 20–30% through the roof.

How Does Heat Recovery Ventilation Work?

A smart heat recovery system continuously refreshes indoor air without making your home cold. It extracts humid, stale air and replaces it with fresh outdoor air. At the same time, an integrated heat exchanger can retain up to 96–98% of heat by transferring warmth to the incoming fresh air.
